You may remember that I made a Hawaiian themed Super Improvers Wall for my classroom.

Well, I have changed up the way I pass out stickers.  They don't go on the little surfer boys and girls on the board anymore - they go in a sticker book!

Head on over to my Whole Brain Teaching With Style blog to see how I use it and to get a free copy for yourself!

I have two exciting things for you today!

First up, I just posted a HUGE freebie over on my Whole Brain Teaching Blog today.  It is over 35 pages of Scoreboards and a 17 page flipbook explaining all the variations of the Scoreboard that you can do throughout the year to spice it up and make it fun for your class!  I printed my flipbook, cut each page in half, laminated, punched a hole in the top left corner, and attached with a binder ring.  Now I can hang it on a Command hook by my Scoreboard to reference whenever I am ready to change it up!

Head over to Whole Brain Teaching With Style to snag your copies!

Second piece of exciting news is that I joined some *AH.MA.ZING* 2nd and 3rd grade bloggers in a new collaborative blog called Owl-Ways Be Inspired.

We are having a grand opening giveaway!  One person will win one Back to School product from each blogger, and there are 25 of us!  Also, during the rest of the month and first week of August, each blogger will introduce themselves with an *exclusive* freebie that can only be found on Owl-Ways Be Inspired!  Just a hint, my freebie is 19 pages!!  Head on over and enter the giveaway.  You could win! :)
I decided to take the plunge and work hard this year to become a Whole Brain Teaching Certified Teacher! I joined up with a summer book club over at Whole Brain Teaching Book Club.  To be certified, you need to produce several online writings that cover different aspects of WBT.  This can be done either on the WBT forums or on a blog.  So, with the help of my amazing blog designing friend Tessa, I created a new blog!

To celebrate my new blog and my leap into all things WBT, I'm having a giveaway!  The awesome people over at MPM School Supplies generously donated TWO $25 give certificates for two lucky winners.  To enter, use the rafflecopter below.  Good luck!

Now that I am in summer mode, I loaded up my kindle with some must read teacher books.  First on my list is Whole Brain Teaching for Challenging Kids by Chris Biffle.  I chose this book first because it's only $7.99 as a kindle download, and also because I dabbled in WBT this year and wanted to learn more.  There is a summer book club going on over at http://wbtbookclub.blogspot.com/.

I love that all of the materials for WBT are free over at their website, www.wholebrainteaching.com.  Materials that other teachers create are also free over at Teachers Pay Teachers.  You might remember that I created a set of the rules to reflect my multicultural classroom back in this blog post in November.

On to the Book Study!

Chapter 1 of the book was all about who created WBT and who uses WBT.  Not only is this good management for your entire classroom, but it is a great way to diffuse those power struggles with your challenging kids.  I used to work at a pretty rough school and sometimes I would come home so angry.  Angry for not receiving enough support from admin, angry for not being able to do everything that was mandated each day, angry that I couldn't reach each and every one of my 33 students.  I was exhausted and fed up.  Instead of leaving the teaching profession, my family and I moved to Hawaii (well, some other reasons factored in, as well).  At my new school, I could start over and try new things to become a better teacher.  One of these new things was Whole Brain Teaching.  I loved that it is focused on fun.  I loved that it was quick paced and got every student involved.  After going a year of dabbling in the techniques and trying it out as I also learned a new grade level, new standards, new curriculum, and a new school system, I am ready to go full out next year.  I am so excited to learn more about WBT and to see it translate into good teaching and learning in the classroom!

In chapter 2, Biffle tells us the First Great law of Whole Brian Teaching: "The longer we talk, the more students we lose."  I am OCDE Project GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) certified and the GLAD model of sheltered instruction says that students need 2 minutes of processing for every 10 minutes of instruction.  They call this a 10/2.  After 10 minutes, have students turn and talk about what they just learned to a neighbor.  WBT uses this same approach, it just creates a much more structured routine for doing this, a routine that every student can follow and know the expectation to.

Another technique of WBT that crosses over with GLAD is the use of TPR (Total Physical Response). TPR is the idea that by assigning movement to learning new vocabulary or language  students will remember the term better.  Since WBT assigns movement with the different rules and routines, I knew that my students would be engaged and learning much more than if I were to just tell them my expectations and leave it at that.

Have you ever felt like me?  Angry and beaten down?  If so, WBT might be the boost your classroom needs!  Join me as I read the book and follow the book study!

{EDIT}
To continue following along with the book study, I have created a WBT-only blog at Whole Brain Teaching With Style, and all other WBT posts will be over there! :)

I'm joining up with Christina from Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge for 2012's Blog Best and Brightest linky party!

Most Popular Post
My most popular post is the one I did about Integrated ELD last spring after visiting Myers Elementary in Salem, OR.  This school uses Integrated ELD and OCDE Project GLAD® strategies to teach all students.  They also use the Daily 5 and some teachers were starting Guided Math groups, as well.  It was amazing to see the learning taking place at this school!

Favorite Freebie
Another popular post of mine is my post about Whole Brain Teaching.  I made a freebie of the rules, and included different genders and races to accommodate all classrooms!  And after I posted this, the teacher from those awesome videos emailed me.  I have to admit, I was a little star struck!! I definitely plan to incorporate more WBT strategies in 2013!

Favorite Post
One of my favorite posts is about boosting vocabulary in the classroom.  I shared how I utilize table group names and TPR to teach difficult vocabulary words.

Favorite Product
My favorite product is my Calendar Starter Set.  The math program at my new school does not have a calendar component, so it is up to me to create one.  I found an old pocket chart in a drawer and have been making calendar pieces each month.  So far, I have 3-D shapes and place value in my TpT store.  I'm working on a time set, as well as a money set.  Those should be out by at least the end of January.

Favorite 2nd Grade Blogs
Now for my favorite bloggers - this year has been so amazing for me since I started my blog.  I joined Teaching Blog Traffic School and met so many other bloggers.  From commenting on blogs, joining linky parties, and participating in fun things, like the Teacher Blogger Gift Exchange and the Product Swap from Mrs. Stanford's Class, I have met even more amazing bloggers!  On my side bar are my absolute besties that I love to chat with online and even text and talk on the phone with some of them!  Here is a list of my must-read 2nd grade blogs:

What are your favorites from this year?
This year, since I'm in a new state and a new school, I decided to start doing Whole Brain Teaching!  My school does not do PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), like I am used to, so I needed something to teach expectations.  This is it!  That kids really love it!  I found a teacher who has the awesomest (is that a word?) YouTube videos of her class and WBT.  She is so inspiring!  She seems so fun, laid back, but on top of things.  I aspire to be like her!

Check her out here:

Here is her website.  I just love her! I hope she creates a teacher blog soon!

One problem I've been having with doing Whole Brain Teaching is that the cute signs out there all have way more white kids on them.  My school is 90% Filipino.  I literally have 2 white kids in my class of 27.  If I post pictures of white only kids in my room, I am not representing my class - I am representing me.  Once I looked around and noticed this, I felt awful.  I want to celebrate my students' heritage, not make them feel bad that they don't look like me.  So, I decided to make my own set!  It is for free on TpT, so you can go over and snag a set for your self!  Included are two options for each rule, and four options for the teacher.  I hope you can use it in your classroom!  If you can, please leave me some feedback on TpT.  I love hearing from you all!
